What is Medicaid Waiver? Federal program by most states that provides long-term services to eligible and qualified applicants with financial limitations, enables remain living independently (at home) or in assisted living residences instead of in nursing home facilities by providing care services and skills training.
Medicaid Waiver Eligibility includes:
- Aged
- Autism
- Intellectual disabilities
- Developmental disabilities (DD)
- etc.
Types of Medicaid Waiver
- Freedom of choice waiver (Section 1915(b) waiver) Approves the state to provide managed care delivery systems but limits beneficiary’s ability to choose their own services providers with the plan.
- HCBS waiver: ( Section 1915(c) waiver.) Approves the state to provide home and community based services (HCBS) to people in need of long-term care. Beneficially may stay in their own home or a community setting (relative’s home or a supported living community) instead of a nursing facility.
- Research and demonstration waiver: (Section 1115 waiver.) The state is approved to test out new approaches to delivering Medicaid care and financing.
